A Thousand Ways

I am still counting moments

A thousand ways the water sloshed the boat

A thousand ways the stars shone there above

A thousand reflections cast across the surface

A thousand moons shimmering in the night

I am savoring each connection

Every step upon the path

Every leaf upon the trees

Our canopy as we wandered

I am still counting moments

A thousand ways I felt understood

And seen

A thousand times I reached

To find you there

Beside me

Walking in this wildness

A mad world

A wilderness

With each new step I take

I count a thousand ways

The light within you shines

A beacon for my heart

Let my light rise too

Let my shine be bright enough

To help you find your way

If you are lost and hurting

Look for my starry sky

Look for the shining sun

Feel the gentle breeze

Warm and plucky

To tease the sorrows from your soul

Release the worries from your brow

For a moment here and now

Be safe and whole

Peaceful in a thousand ways

Know you are loved

A thousand ways

Raining Hearts

Shadows overcasting

The sun cannot be seen

My heart is bright and singing

Watching the rain that’s falling

Music to my ears

Music in my veins

The rhythm sets my toes to tapping

There’s sparkles in my eyes

It’s raining hearts today

Smiles are all I see

Reflected in the faces that I meet

Reflected in the passing glance

Of my reflection

Dawn arrived with sunshine

I can feel behind the clouds

The rain will move along in time

The sky will be revealed

With upturned faces we can

Stand upon the earth

With sunlight we’ll be dreaming

Of some better days to come

Sun Rise

Little flickering candle flame

I see you

Holding back the dark

I watch you grow

See how life tipped you over

Almost snuffing out that fragile flame

I see the spark catch as you become

A fire burning through the debris

Those before you left behind them

From this distance, I float

Enthralled as your slow burn

Raging and ebbing

Creeps across the wasted lands

Breaking open seeds long dormant

Waiting for the heat of your existence

They call you wild and run from your path

The world burns with your passion

The collision seems slow

Burning worlds you and her and him and them

Smashed together by happenstance

Igniting

Galactic conflagration

Burning star giving birth

To satellites

Meta-you becomes the center

Of the solar system

I watched the sun rise

Where a candle once burned

Small against encroaching darkness

I See You, Magnificent

I would tell you over and again

What I love about you

How the sparkle in your eyes lights up the world

How your big huge heart inspires me

How your dedication to the ones you love earns my respect

I would tell you once again

How your love for nature resonates through the wild woods

How your ability to overcome adversity with patience and hope brightens dark corners

How your insights and devotion to growth blaze trails in the minds around you

I would tell you once more

How your presence in this world is needed

How without you the world would be smaller, darker, colder

How without you the music would never play

The sun itself would dull

The clouds would never lift

And song itself would end

These are some of the ways I love you

How can I thank you for the joy you bring

For the light that shines through you

For the notes that become the melody

The harmony of this dissonant world

How can I thank you for staying

Who will tell you these things when I am gone

Listen to the whisper of the wind at dawn

To the ocean coming to shore

To the birds singing in the trees

Saying, “Thank you. I love you. I see you, magnificent.”

Weapons of Soil

We turned the earth over in rows

Removing rocks

Breaking chunks of clay

We composted the past and stirred

When they came for us

We marched and toiled

Longing for the days of seeds and

The times we had hoped for rain

It’s not our battle we fought

We were turned over the earth in rows

Weapons of soil

Carving territories

Engraving lines to define

Our stained hands longed for the dirt

For something simple and straightforward

We fought to return home

When we got there we found it was gone

Weeds and salted earth

Barren

The trees majestic were stumps

The wood turned to ash in fires which

Never warmed us

So we huddled next to the ruined forest

Weeping in the cold

Would that the story be over

How we persist in misery

Roaming to find a fertile place

A peaceful pond or

A clear flowing stream

Something to nourish us

Something to nurture us

Someone to welcome us with our ghosts

We put hand to blade and hand to plough

The work is never done

The work is never done

The light sparks and sputters

We sing to the tinder

Until the soft winding smoke wisps

Into a frosty night

Small flickering flame rising

Here come the horns and flute

Thundering hooves and the call of an owl

Weapons of soil gone feral

Wild in the wood

To create something new

To bring forth that which was left behind

When we left the wilderness

The spirit wells like a rising river

There is a surge as the tide rushes to shore

The moonshine insists

The sun never relents

The face of the earth changes

We turn the earth over in rows

Composting what we once had needed

To grow a fresh crop

From new seeds

Missing Nothing

I made room

Expanded

Fit love into sun filled mornings

Woodland walks

Midnight songs

Moonlit rambles

Between times so full

I never stopped

No need to stop

No lack therein

Nothing missing

Like water carving out the rock

Like earthquakes opening the ground

Like giving away things no longer used

I made room

Now I am open and not full

Of the light that used to shine

I turn under the silver moon

Slowly under a slivered shard

Of what had been robust and

Bright

To myself I am returned

Missing nothing

But that song

That shimmering glow

Just salty rivers running muddy

From these eyes down to the sea

I walk these sandy shores again

Under the stars

Just me

Unregarded

Unremarked and solitary

Did you find yourself unraveled

Are the trees whispering your name

When you walk beneath their branches

Are the birds still singing of your passage

There below

Do the chipmunks and the squirrels

Chatter on in playful sparring

Are the feelings in your breast drawing swords

And gone a warring

Does the battle rage within you

Under the blue and open sky

Waving grasses lightly browned

Do they bow as you walk by

Is the wind bringing you messages

To the spirit that you carry

Urging you to hurry

Do not linger

Do not tarry

In the coldest morning’s touch

Frosted lashes

Cold dark tales

Are you running toward a future

Are you fleeing from what was

Will you stop and see the beauty

Close your eyes and just step off

Too many ways to go along

Too many ways to stop

Can you hear the murmur there

Beneath the traffic and the noise

Unwrap the bandage from the wound

Let it seep and let it pour

You’re almost there

You’ve almost made it

Just one more rise to reach

To feel the sun

That shining balm

Central star

And come undone

In this quiet morment

Right before the twilight

And the dawn

Love is chasing down your heart

Love is waiting at the bend

Love is the path on which you run

Love is the stars at night

Love is the flaming dawn

Love is the shimmering

Glimmering

Light within you

Love has been there all along

You’ve Left Me an Opening

The walls were taken down so long ago

Stones and rubble piled to the side

Determined saplings reaching skyward

Roots snaking through the cracks in search of nourishment

The path is narrow and

Little used

Who passed this way last

Matters not

My feet are bare against the dewy grasses

The earth is guiding me home

There is a perimeter

Where I await

At the opening

For the invitation to

Approach

Deep in the wilderness

Untamed and free

The breeze catches on my dress

Birds singing lovely in the trees

A breath catching moment

Life itself beckons from the ruins

“Dance and sing”

Sun setting gently

Moon rising

Stars will twinkle a melody

Divine

I dance beneath

A shimmering sky

Through the opening

You left for me

Unsettled

The great winnowing of possessions

Releasing the unnecessary

Shredding the past

Carefully boxing up the essential

Giving, giving, giving

Each load that goes

A bit more freedom gained

The road calls strongly

“Are you coming?

Are you on the way?”

Well, I’m going somewhere

Similar to a place I’ve been

Time adjacent

The stream has run the long course

The years have changed me

I will step into the water

Remembering the stream that was

And the young woman who grew there

I bring the world with me

All that I’ve seen since then

Molded by travel and children and joy

Reduced by loss and loneliness and pain

A life changing movement

A life changing moment

A new start

A fresh beginning

“I can be flexible”

I said

And made it so

“I don’t have the confidence for this”

I confided

And yet it arrived with that acknowledgement

Not the brash bravado I used to wear

A committed determination

All I can ask of myself today

Is to show up for this life

To risk, and to try

I am not alone in this

I am loved

I am loved truly and fiercely

“Let me know if there’s anything I can do”

There is room for me

In this world

That for so long I felt

Held no space for me

I will step into the water

And let it cool my feet

From the heat of travel

And rest a moment

As the sun filters down through the trees

Fragile (with audio)

Sandcastles and porcelain

The ice layer formed just above flowing water

A second day bruise

We build and build

Careers

Identity

Relationships

Longing for longlasting

Pieced together like paper thin ice

Over an air pocket above flowing water

Drop the porcelain

See it shatter into sharp shards

Watch the waves of time wash away the work

Of a lifetime

And we build and build

Ants pouring out of a nest to remove and replace

Each misplaced grain of sand disturbed by the giant feet of fate

And one day we breathe

A pause in the scurry-hurry tedium

And listen to who we are

Who we are

Who are we

What are we

A small flame in the dark night

The rise of the sun glowing on the horizon

The waves reaching for the shore

Coming close then retreating

The sprout of a seed in a slow rise to heaven

Breathing life into every action

Breathing love into every thought

We leave building behind us

And reveal ourselves

The revelation arrived on the breath

The flow unstoppered flows from the vessel

Nothing has changed

Everything is different

The outer is still fragile

Unforgiving

Inside is strength eternal

Compassionate

We dare to love

We dare to dream

Building once again with reverence

Building once more with intention

Understanding that it will

Of course

All wash away

It will shatter

And it is worth it

Still
