Behind the Songs: Mixtures Poetica Preview Tracks

Previews of the tracks for the upcoming album Mixtures Poetica album are now posted on SoundCloud with more to come in the following weeks.

Mixtures Poetica is the follow up album to the previously released EP Poetic Mixtures which was an exploration of audio techniques combining poetic elements with soundscapes for mood and setting, and can be found on many platforms.

One of the things I love about Puddle of Words (written first on this very blog here) is that it really captures the essence for me of how books can pull you right into them, and the invitation to read together. Those favorite books are the ones we want our people to read and share in the story, the experience, the characters!

With Eternal Constellation, I really struggled to capture the feel and texture and delivery that I wanted for it. I woke up one morning with the idea for a stronger speaking element, and the resulting track has an irony about it that emphasizes how a step towards self-centeredness (being true to self and one’s intuition) combats people pleasing conformity, but there has to be balance so that becoming self-centered (in the selfish sense) is avoided.

I had a lot of fun making these, and enjoy listening to them. I hope you enjoy them too!

Dismantled

Apart came the cassette player

Tiny screwdriver unwinding tiny screws

The music box with the ballerina

Slowly spinning static above red satin

The fabric tugged out carefully

A mysterious mechanism released from its hold

No longer attached

Free

The work took place in secret

Spaces during times unlikely

To be distubed

Taking it all apart

How romantic

To try and see how it all worked

Springs and metal tines

And a spindle with well positioned bumps

Made music for the dancer

Why did she dance

How could she not

But

I was stymied at the circuit board

For recording every note

A small city with sculptured silver pyramids

Barrel buildings on their sides held aloft on metal legs

How poetic

To wonder what mysteries were held

In the little spaces

Colored beads of wonder

Against the green

And to put it back together

And to insure that it would work

Nothing broken

Nothing loose

No shred of evidence behind

Tiny tools were hidden

Until the next time

Fragile (with audio)

Sandcastles and porcelain

The ice layer formed just above flowing water

A second day bruise

We build and build

Careers

Identity

Relationships

Longing for longlasting

Pieced together like paper thin ice

Over an air pocket above flowing water

Drop the porcelain

See it shatter into sharp shards

Watch the waves of time wash away the work

Of a lifetime

And we build and build

Ants pouring out of a nest to remove and replace

Each misplaced grain of sand disturbed by the giant feet of fate

And one day we breathe

A pause in the scurry-hurry tedium

And listen to who we are

Who we are

Who are we

What are we

A small flame in the dark night

The rise of the sun glowing on the horizon

The waves reaching for the shore

Coming close then retreating

The sprout of a seed in a slow rise to heaven

Breathing life into every action

Breathing love into every thought

We leave building behind us

And reveal ourselves

The revelation arrived on the breath

The flow unstoppered flows from the vessel

Nothing has changed

Everything is different

The outer is still fragile

Unforgiving

Inside is strength eternal

Compassionate

We dare to love

We dare to dream

Building once again with reverence

Building once more with intention

Understanding that it will

Of course

All wash away

It will shatter

And it is worth it

Still

Upcoming Music Release

I’ll be back to my regular programming soon. I have this happening on the 20th, and am finishing up the research and edits on the next installment of the podcast, too.

This new music release is a combination of spoken poetry and musical composition. I hope you’ll like it as much as I enjoyed the creation.

If you’re on SoundCloud, find me there so I can follow you. 🙂

Need (with audio)

Washed out colors

Washed out road

Washed out goals

A bleak trudge through these twilight years

I settled into the greys

The hueless landscape without danger

A bland chowder lacking salt

Devoid of spices

Lukewarm

With water colors

I painted my environment

Undersaturated in pastel tints

Life came calling, then, at my closed door

Bringing flowers, and salt water, and glorious sunsets

I smiled politely, found a vase, took a swim, snapped a photo

Life courted me relentlessly, heedless of my discontent

A musical renaissance, an auditory serenade

My indifferent diffidence began to differentiate

A technicolor palette overcame the the somber tones

I danced to swaying tree limbs in a solitary sequence

Let me stay asleep, it’s warm here

Who needs hot and cold, and spices and troubles?

I will gamely march unremarked to the end, I thought

It’s what I wanted, but I did not account for need

Life brought me chocolates, sent me on adventurous trips

Bought me tickets to the theater, invited friends and family to my door

Need showed up silently creeping

Need slipped in under the door

Need required, demanded a brand new accounting

It’s all beyond my control now

The riotous colors, and blossoming flora

The music’s too loud, and I’m dancing too fast

The lights are all flashing, the rhythm is thumping

And there in the center of vibrant toned life

The ocean waves ceasing after the storm

In the soft glow of sunrise when life called to me

I answered the door with a welcoming air

Let the glorious light of the dawn into the room
