By Moonlight

We speak love into being by moonlight

Every word and question and wonder drawing a picture

Of what could be

The soft fall of sound from lips sweetly

Outlining the colorful touch

Silhouettes against the night sky

The moon is our witness

This hope growing

Intentionally

In the pale light

Across the water

Under the trees

As wild hearts weave

Poetry by moonlight

Who Fell First

Memory is tricky

Fading tricks of light

Remembering what we thought we knew

Obscure

Slightly askew

Summer days of honey

Golden light and blue blue skies

Buzzing bees o’er fields of clover

Thunderstorms blew up from the past

Roiling clouds come rolling in from distant places

Pink heat lighting flickers long before the booming sounds

A charge is in the air

The temperature is dropping

Darkening sky and quickening heart

We were just fourteen when all time stopped

A crack of lighting lashed the sky

Large slow drops began to hit the warm concrete

Sidewalks curbs and suburban streets

Manicured grass soft to barefeet

Low rumblings growing closer

The light then sound and count it out

How far the storm we wonder

Every minute stronger power

We mark the moment that all changes

From comfortable skin to something new

A glance

A brush of bare arms

We are crackling like lightning

Our hearts are thunderous

Treacherous beasts

At the loudest sudden sound we shudder

Laughing just a beat too late

The sky is fissured

Cracked by light and split by sound

Here comes the rain now pouring down

We run out in the wind arms wide

We spin in storms outside of time

Tumble together in the sodden grass

We laugh with gods and goddesses

We made it here at last

This refuge from the past

Collapsed

I guess it never mattered

Who fell first

We help each other up

The storm has left a promise

We collect it every day

Every breath

Every beat of passion

Every gentle glance of love

We walk away still holding hands

The path calling us home awaits

The Welcoming

He arrives in swirls of feelings

Wide eyed and questioning

I lower my eyes and make space

There’s plenty of room for us both

Will you

He asks

Yes

The boundaries in place

I will wait

For the welcoming

For the wonder

For the calling

For the pleasure

I will walk free beside him

When he arrives

In a swirl of colors and sound

Breathing life into a dead space

Breathing warmth into the cold

Breathing love into the empty place

My heart left when it flew

To be near him

I dance alone until then

Content to be myself

Letting my heart roam where it will

Until it returns for this moment

Of welcoming

Discomfort

Longing for safety

A warm cocoon

Leave the cold at the door

Closed eyes against the troubles

Howling in the dark

I want soft music and quiet books

I want romance and love stories and happy endings

I want boats floating on tranquil waters

Under blue skies with cotton candy clouds

Longing for pleasant dreams

Deep sleeps

Friends and laughter

Good hard work with time to rest

Time for me

Longing for home somewhere

Sometime

Discord makes an ingress

Violence calls unannounced

Shocking not shocking

How full of madness is the world

How full of strife

We no longer have to operate from such lack

How can humanity continue in this way

There is plenty for everyone

Distribution and hoarding are the main barriers

Logistics, and logic, and heart

Could so easily combine

Here we sit on the sidewalk in the rain

In wonder that no one opens the buildings empty

For shelter

Could you care less

Could you care more

Discomfort

Could you address the

Could you change the

Can we improve the

Blank spaces with hope

Blank spaces with care

Bland spaces before we

Slip over the edge

Humanity drowning in war

Humanity choked by greed

We were called to love

Above all

Our people

We were called to love

And did not answer this discomfort

With charity or generosity or wisdom

So came the collapse

Towers of Babel falling

Undone by pride and ignorance and obstinance

The ocean devoured the mountain

The mountain exploded into the sky

Somewhere a small god giggled to a

Small goddess and said

“Okay, I reset it. Your turn.”

Things People Say

She says I’ve lost weight again

I tell her I’ve been lovelorn

We both know it is a lie

I’ve gained two pounds since I saw her last

Tears no longer roll down these cheeks

It’s Lady Gaga I reply

What does she sing about

About relationships between people

She watches the neighborhood rolling through the window

As she says: It is very difficult to accept sweet love after abuse, I think

That might be true I tell her

The Lady sings

He says people who love are duped

That passive people are easily controlled

God is an asshole

Love is a scam to keep people

To keep people from success and whatever

I watch him drift away in clouds of thoughts

I show up daily in love

The grand illusion

He says that he would drive me crazy

I could never put up with him

We agreed

Made room for a friendship

Where romance could not take hold

She said I don’t need to be put down

Or treated badly

I wondered how much room to make

For bad days and trying times

Where and how to draw healthy lines

There are no answers outside

Of this heart

Ignited

I had put it behind me

Like banana seat bikes, and Weebles

Like high waisted jeans, and permed hair

Like grunge bands, and punk on a 7-inch

Set those dreams aside in the bin of what’s not possible

Romance and passion is for the young, I demurred

Give me quiet conversations over coffee

I will settle for just the shoulder bumping, sidewalk shuffling

Twilight walks in cultivated gardens

I would have settled

There is no shame in end-of-years companionships

Growing quietly like herb gardens

Full of medicine and savory flavors

And you brought cayenne peppers

Exotic flowers

Flames and ginger beer

And my heart burst open

On fire

And this soul awakened to a deeper rhythm

A dance without end

Intertwined

The roses are burning

The roses are singing

The colors are full of sparks

The roses are my heart in your hands

And we will walk shoulder to shoulder

At twilight through garden paths

While the fires burn through time

Reducing to ashes the past

Reducing to ashes the future

And the passion of now

Ignites the earth aflame

With each syncopated step we take

In this dance

Together
