Who Fell First

Memory is tricky

Fading tricks of light

Remembering what we thought we knew

Obscure

Slightly askew

Summer days of honey

Golden light and blue blue skies

Buzzing bees o’er fields of clover

Thunderstorms blew up from the past

Roiling clouds come rolling in from distant places

Pink heat lighting flickers long before the booming sounds

A charge is in the air

The temperature is dropping

Darkening sky and quickening heart

We were just fourteen when all time stopped

A crack of lighting lashed the sky

Large slow drops began to hit the warm concrete

Sidewalks curbs and suburban streets

Manicured grass soft to barefeet

Low rumblings growing closer

The light then sound and count it out

How far the storm we wonder

Every minute stronger power

We mark the moment that all changes

From comfortable skin to something new

A glance

A brush of bare arms

We are crackling like lightning

Our hearts are thunderous

Treacherous beasts

At the loudest sudden sound we shudder

Laughing just a beat too late

The sky is fissured

Cracked by light and split by sound

Here comes the rain now pouring down

We run out in the wind arms wide

We spin in storms outside of time

Tumble together in the sodden grass

We laugh with gods and goddesses

We made it here at last

This refuge from the past

Collapsed

I guess it never mattered

Who fell first

We help each other up

The storm has left a promise

We collect it every day

Every breath

Every beat of passion

Every gentle glance of love

We walk away still holding hands

The path calling us home awaits

We Carry Nothing Now

How heavy it feels

This illusion

On days of greys and glooms

We say if onlys

And we say what thens

Wondering if there were more

Or less we could have done

Can we but stop time

Or go back

Or be different

The flowers would all be in bloom

The sun would shine

Our very souls would unravel

Into beams of starlight

We look forward lifting

Heaving the past with us

Dragging our mistakes behind us

Again again again

Piling new ones onto the old

If onlys

What thens

Why not ungrasp

The hold of fear

In realization of our light

Reduce the shadows

Become wild and free

Wind and ocean

Vast and unencumbered

Right now

Bones Shake

The bones of the earth rattle

What have you done

Mountain tops tumble

What have you done

Red rivers running rivulets

Through the ruddy landscape

What have you done

Howling winds demand to know

What have you done

Plucking trees from forest beds

Planks sailing through the sky

What have you done

The skeletons are restless

The closet doors won’t hold

The basement is unbedded

The graves grave stories are unfolded

What have you done

Ghostly spirits wailing

Tragedies untold

The bones shake with fury

The bones shake with grace

The finger of the past is pointing

The earth herself is speaking

What have you done

Nothing just or righteous

Be certain

The sky is falling

Blood dripping down the canvas

The past is calling

Unanswerable muted mumbles

To your knees fiends

Your time is up

The forest has risen

Growing wooden stakes

For vampire hearts

The ashes have gathered

The bones shake

The bones shake

And you cannot dance

No more

Curving

It’s become a way of life

Changing direction

Fate is playing fickle

With my life

Destiny is peering closely

Moving the markers

Removing resources

Adding new elements

There’s no anger with the losses

A sorrow of losing what’s been

Left behind

There’s hope and renewal and optimism

Amidst the frustration and angst

If life settles again

Will I miss the adventures

The stories

The trouble

Someone must stir the pot

Of complacency

Blending the old with the new

The past with the now

No time for stewing

A long hard look at options

Decisive choosing

Another meal, another night

Another triumph, another fight

Struggle is always a part of this life

I weave in the joy

With a practiced maneuver

I’ve been on the mystery path

Not like this one at all

Full of unknown curves

Limited vision

And a pocketful of dreams

Listen

You can hear the changes

Tempo, keys, all laden

With a new song for a new day

Played in a new way

But for how long

Dancing to this beat now

Dancing to this beat now

For now for now for now

Let the future be there

When it arrives I won’t be ready

Even if I’m prepared

Different Now

Subtle shades have fallen

In lavender and blues

The sky glows pink on that horizon

No clouds on furrowed brows

How crisp the winter morning grows

Subdued

I miss the waking joy I felt

I miss the anticipation

Dogged daily duties are just passing

Time

My spirit rises slowly

To meet another empty day

To greet and see the beauty

Still, it’s not the same

I fill up all the empty spaces

The quiet lasts too long

That part of me still pouting

Don’t want to love

Don’t want to move

Don’t want to stay

Don’t want to feel this way

Again

Drink a cup of coffee

Thinking of the ones who love me

Life abounds me

Love surrounds me

I know that joy is not essential

Joy will visit once again

Slogging through the morning

In its subtle shades of blue

My sighing breath a meditation

Of all the ways that I miss you

Born to love

Taught to give

Slowly learning how to let go

Slowly letting go

I show up ready every time

Open hearted

True

I let the healing taking its course

I let the difference be

I’ll get used to who I am now

This dawning light on me

I glow a little brighter now

A little larger

A little lighter

When my home appears

To welcome me

There will be no lingering

Regret

No lingering in the past

I watch the different ways

The light tastes

In lavender and blues

This Town is Haunted

Under a hot blue sky

Ruffled by breezes

The past overlaid the present

I could hear the chubby toddler laughter

Of an evening walk gone by

How many times we trod

Down this sidewalk as the sun lowered

But no

He’s grown and left

This echo of his early life

Reverberating in my heart

I drive passed the place of the fender bender

I stand in the parking lot of a previous job

From a previous time

Worked by a previous me

The brick is the same

The sign is unchanged

Am I late? I wonder

Bygones and bygones

I miss the turn to the old house

I wasn’t going there anyway

It’s too familiar and too far away

The dreams of this place span universes

Seven unique interpretations of this single nexus

On the curve of the road which binds them together

I am saturated with awareness

Anticipation

The wave is cresting

A hollow formed under the curve

Chaos is sure to follow

At the moment of submersion

Water will roil and rush the shore

The present rearranged to accommodate

Phantasms and other worlds

Watching where I step

When the boundaries thin

Where magic happens

But the ghosts pass on

Without saying good-bye

Without a wink and a nod

They fade and dissolve

I weave a new adventure

Over faded threads and bare spots

Working in and around the beautiful

Images which have kept their color

Preserved with love

This town is haunted

One more ghost returned now

Two Worlds

Then and now

A foot in the past, and a foot in the present

Straddling what went before

A bridge of doubt attached to this moment

Now and then

One foot in present as the other moves

Gamely toward the future

Here and there

One foot in this place as one crosses

Every potential to a new state

A new town

One step from where I came from

One step to where I go

Spinning from the stories of what might

Have beens and maybes

Holding what will be loosely

Unformed

Brimming with hope

Beaming with light

And it’s still one small trip to the

Grocery store

And where will I get boxes

And how will I pack up this little life

And leave behind

The comfort of not much

To reach forward to something

Undefined

A thousand decisions

And a giant leap

Across the chasm of uncertainty

I might fall through

I might fly

But I can’t stay here

Like this

When it’s time to go

I’m gone
