Freshly Brewed Excerpt (Poem)

Morning came again anyway

Headache

Buttons pressed

The making and unmaking

Without end

Fill the cup

Empty the cup

Tidy

Mess it all up

Repeat

Repeat

Repeat

Until the song stops hurting

And the aroma becomes pleasant

And each breath welcome again

Drink deeply then

Of life

A Small Peace to Pay

I sat in meditation for hours or a day

Listening to my breath

My heartbeat

And the rest

The world did slide away

In darkness as I prayed

The prayers then fell aside

There was nowhere I could hide

In the empty stretching void

Feelings rose and feelings fell

I sat in meditation

Until I heard the bell

A resonation rising falling

An atonal silent calling

Loud in absence

Did I grow there in the forest

Of darkness silent

Is this realization

To know the breadth and depth

Of spirit

That giants walk among us

Dressed in common streetwear

No way to tell who’s who

Puff of smoke

I disappeared

The memory faded too

I walk the streets as small

As ever I used to

But for a moment I was grande

For an instant I was wise

Now I avoid my meditation

Sitting still and quiet

I take it with me when I walk

Doing dishes and the like

It’s a small peace to pay

Coins of wisdom falling

Into open palms

Trusting the right moment

The right word for to say

We are not alone here

Struggling with our tasks

Connected as we are to every life form

For help to come

We just must ask

I am not wise or wisdom bound

I seek only for the path

The next right thing to do before me

A clear step forward on the way

Holding lightly to this person

Who I’ve been and who I am

A small peace to pay

Centered in my heart

Dollars dropping dangers

Drifting on the breeze

The pains and joys of life

In and out just like the tides

Floating in this moment

Of crowded solitude

I walk the streets around here

Just as wise as you

To Step Between

We see grief approaching

A heart we love

Our friend

Our child

Our parent

Our neighbor

Helpless to prevent the collision

To step between

And take the blow

Wouldn’t you know

That it passes through

We feel the ricochet

And our heart hurts too

We can sit there only

In love and patience and wait

Being present

In grief as in love as in laughter

Life steam rolls everyone once

In a while

Devestating

Sadness

To step between worlds

Yours and ours

To step between griefs

To step between shores

Across an ocean engulphed

To step between body and spirit

Between mind and heart

To cross caverns and mountains and forests

Spanning generations and years and moments

Bridges of love

Slippery stones in the river

We love and we risk and some days we lose

Heart

Hoping in time we can make room

For more love and more light

And feel less the pains of this life

Common

Unique and distinguished

We yet share

Woe and distress

Common shame and suffering

That in shadows full of dread

We feel them larger and unweildy

Stronger and unyielding

Then they appear once in the light

There are some, it’s true

Who feel not life’s great and awful sadness

Inexplicable angst

Isolated troubles

Suffering of spirit

When life’s gone all awry

Every step is wrong

Rolling on the floor in writhing agony

Alone and yet together

All this pain of life we weather

Hoping for an end

For some peace

For something better

For anything at all to lift us out of sorrow

From the sages to the pages

Sayings written once or twice

Hang on to love

Be open hearted

One more minute

One more hour

When subjected to the fires

Flames upon each wound

A subtle transformation

A phoenix rising plumed

Hold on to love

Keep going

Take your rest along the way

Remember this is common

Part of life to grieve this day

As the tide returns to shore

One wave after another

Joy will find you in the moonlight

Joy will find you in the dusk

Joy will wake you in the morning

Joy returns little by little

In that flower startled beauty

In the clouds suspended there

In the laughter of your loved ones

In the twilight somber falling

Common sorrow

Common beauty

Will find you there upon the sand

Unique and still distinguished

Healing slowly everywhere

Memory of Today

Each moment I hold on to light

Letting go and holding tight

Packing memories of today

With open wings for flight

I can’t lift off the ground

With all the ballast that I found

Cutting loose

Cutting loose

I let the moments pass me by

The memories fading as they form

Shapes in clouds and then they’re gone

What sweet impression had you left

Cut by cruelty I wept

A freedom only sought by daydreams

Ephemeral bargains never kept

One more tie to loosen

Ruffled feathers smoothed

The sky is always waiting

Always wanting me to choose

I soar above it all

Pain and love and strife

I look down to watch you

In the distance

Standing by the rope that’s cut

I watch you sheath your knife

Detritus

There is no composition

Without decomposition

We break down

Broken down by fates and whims

The sun shines

The wind howls

The rain falls

The rotting and decay

Spirits falling and flagging and flailing

Components revealed

Bleached bones of old structures

Half buried by what used to be

Gone

Our youth

Gone

Our pride

Gone

Our strength

Molecules become atoms

Reforming into new molecules

Reprocessed

All the material at the ready

For composition

We write our stories in time

One decision after the next

Seeds splitting open to sprout

Recombining the secret patterns

Into glittering webs of life

We sing hope into the sky

Bright streams of glorious light

One note after the next

A chorus

A melody

A symphony

From that pain and joy

Wringing something new out of the earth

Until we are so far away from the detritus

That we forget

Have forgotten

That it was born from utter destruction

Of what had been

Broken down through time

Rocks became rubble

Oceans rose and fell

Fires flamed and fed

We turn

We turn

We turn to stone and

When the butterfly lands

On our shoulders

We return to life

To grow and glow and shine

Hearts open and eyes bright

Keep Warm

There is the cold void of space

Expanding through your heart

Temperatures dropping

Daily

Every slight, every ding, every pain

We numb and withdraw

Our sap dropping from limbs to root

Our leaves fall beautiful

Into piles of decay

How to continue

Why go on

When it hurts

Grief overtaking

And spring is so far away

Don’t stay there in the heart of winter

Rest and repair and rise again

Capture each ray of sunshine

Be soothed by the songs of the birds

Revel in the blue, blue sky

Wrap the grey clouds around you

Sprout

Grow

Fly

The heart of summer is always within you

A blooming meadow

Paradise of butterflies and bumblebees

Keep warm

With the kind word of a friend

Laughter

A good book

Keep warm deep into the restless night

Keep warm kindled sparks in reserve

Until you become the star

Altering

my arm guards the tender place

there is pain

my body lists a little to the side

bending and curving around what hurts

habits forming with thought and without thought

moving crookedly now

a soreness that will ease

perhaps

with time and attention

these are the obvious and expected

reactions to physical wounds

where does my mind bend around a tender spot

is it camouflaged deftly

preventing awareness from tending those

heart wounds

like a garden to pluck the weeds

like a garden to turn the soil

like a garden to compost last year’s crop

like a garden to grow healthy vegetables

like a garden to grow medicinal herbs

like a garden to grow beautiful flowers

the potential is there

but I must walk through the garden gate

maybe rusted shut

hinges needing to be replaced

so it does not scrape the ground

I gather the tools

I let down my guard

the only time to begin is now

and always
