Heart Returned to Sender

My heart returned last night

From adventures far and wide

A little sheepish

A little quiet

A little battered from the journey

A little rougher than I’d like

So, I set it on the stage with me

Poured love into the mic

Watched it grow and heal beneath

The cozy, kind bar lights

All the worries

All the fears

All the longing that I feel

For a connection deep and true

Transformed by chord and key

Unlocking every fetter

Chaining you to me

I sing away the blues

I’m lost within the music now

My heart is home and healthy

Sound

Giving thanks and gratitude

For every song I drew

From all the love I won and lost

For all the mysteries uncovered

For every dream come true

We’re getting ready for the next dream

Recovery and rest

My heart is home again now

Returned to sender from the best

I could imagine

Whether truth or lie

Love is never ending

Friend

Love never dies

Where Have You Gone

The winds blew you away

In a gale

In a whoosh

In a breeze

Tumbling across the desert

Deluged in the sheeting rain

Capsized by waves

Howling

Whispering

Winds

Did you continue courageous

Did you succeed victorious

Were you scrambling for footing

Have you lost your way

Does your heart still beat for truth

Are you seeking love

Are you hanging upside down in a tree

The hanged man suspended

Biding time

Waiting for the stars to align

Hark to the spring song

The lilies bloom in time

The roads converge

The wind dies

We stand at the grave weeping

She is reborn

The whole world rejoiced

A rainbow glowing

Across the ocean bound

Where have you gone that

You cannot return again

A new path on an old road

An old foot on a new path

Where have you gone my heart

I hear you beating on the wind

Reborn

Flying home

Soaring free

In a Snowy Field

Clicked my boots into snow shoes

Headed out across the white

One step floating sinking

Then the next

Layers of snow telling a story

Fleeting

Of blowing winds with dry small flakes

Atop a crust, robustly formed shelf

Over top an airy, cool, shadowed space

Towards the woods in bundled bliss

Sun sparkling on each flake

I tramped and trod until I stood

Alone amidst the water chilled

In the distance came a whomp

A settling tremor of the snow

So unprepared for such a sound

Reverberating all around

I shook and steadied

Watched and readied

For trouble my way to abound

The silence in the aftershock

In sparkling sunlight glowed

It’s how my heart stands solitary

Now that you have flown

In frozen beauty all alone

Another step away from home

Unregarded

Unremarked and solitary

Did you find yourself unraveled

Are the trees whispering your name

When you walk beneath their branches

Are the birds still singing of your passage

There below

Do the chipmunks and the squirrels

Chatter on in playful sparring

Are the feelings in your breast drawing swords

And gone a warring

Does the battle rage within you

Under the blue and open sky

Waving grasses lightly browned

Do they bow as you walk by

Is the wind bringing you messages

To the spirit that you carry

Urging you to hurry

Do not linger

Do not tarry

In the coldest morning’s touch

Frosted lashes

Cold dark tales

Are you running toward a future

Are you fleeing from what was

Will you stop and see the beauty

Close your eyes and just step off

Too many ways to go along

Too many ways to stop

Can you hear the murmur there

Beneath the traffic and the noise

Unwrap the bandage from the wound

Let it seep and let it pour

You’re almost there

You’ve almost made it

Just one more rise to reach

To feel the sun

That shining balm

Central star

And come undone

In this quiet morment

Right before the twilight

And the dawn

Love is chasing down your heart

Love is waiting at the bend

Love is the path on which you run

Love is the stars at night

Love is the flaming dawn

Love is the shimmering

Glimmering

Light within you

Love has been there all along

Wasteland

Nothing grows there

But rocks and dust and debris

Rain never falls

Frozen at room temperature

Solid and unmoving

It’s not death

It’s not life

Stasis

Eons will pass

before there will be change

growth

We pass through it

on the way to our heart

Crunching the past underfoot

searching always

for depth of soil

moisture

In the forest shades

And bright meadows

We plant tears

tending sprouts like newborns

leaving behind

all that will not be needed

in this next step we take

The Sky’s Blush

Two moments in time

Mine

Yours

Looking skyward and beyond

Into the infinite

Where touching briefly

Soft illumination

A comfort

A hope

In communion

With the all that is

We stretch across time

In two moments

Hearts beating the rhythm

Of changes to come

Pointing to a path not yet taken

The sun rises

The sun sets

As these moments roll away

And the path remains

What calls forth the spirit at dawn

What settles the mind at dusk

Tender shoots struggling for purchase

Reaching upward

To the sky’s blush

Reaching

The path may be twisted

In directions unexpected

See the beauty in the bends

How the journey swiftly wends

Through forest and the vale

Making an interesting tale

For me I choose adventure

Off the path I would not censure

The call of mystery and magic

Not the antithesis of logic

Weave them both together

Every challenge will be weathered

Rational mind and spirit cleaved as one

On this sinuous road leading me home

I Swallowed the Sky – 12/3/2020

Lying in the grass

Watching clouds float above me

The humming of the bees, and bugs

Were toning among the flowers

While dreaming shapes were wound

Up in the air, I wished to fly

But it was not to be

There were no wings for flight

I could not remember how to launch

Gravity clenched me close to earth

Gravity cinched me anchored to the earth

And so my eyes were widened drenched

In fancies of dust and mist

Until I swallowed every shape, and

Every curve

And every wish

There dragons, fish, and dolphins

I ate them up with sight

Faces of the mermaids, and the trolls

I lie there in the grass until I started getting cold

I lie there in the grass until I started getting old

I lie there in the grass and now I’ve turned to stone

When you pass me on your journey

Lay your hand upon my seams

Those cracks and divots peeling are where

The early morning steam

Releases each and every wish I ate

Releasing every dream

Don’t linger long within my meadow

Touch me swiftly

Move along

The gravity is strong here

The weight of all that’s wrong here

Caught between the dreams and earth

Caught between the earth and dreams
