Behind the Songs: Mixtures Poetica Preview Tracks

Previews of the tracks for the upcoming album Mixtures Poetica album are now posted on SoundCloud with more to come in the following weeks.

Mixtures Poetica is the follow up album to the previously released EP Poetic Mixtures which was an exploration of audio techniques combining poetic elements with soundscapes for mood and setting, and can be found on many platforms.

One of the things I love about Puddle of Words (written first on this very blog here) is that it really captures the essence for me of how books can pull you right into them, and the invitation to read together. Those favorite books are the ones we want our people to read and share in the story, the experience, the characters!

With Eternal Constellation, I really struggled to capture the feel and texture and delivery that I wanted for it. I woke up one morning with the idea for a stronger speaking element, and the resulting track has an irony about it that emphasizes how a step towards self-centeredness (being true to self and one’s intuition) combats people pleasing conformity, but there has to be balance so that becoming self-centered (in the selfish sense) is avoided.

I had a lot of fun making these, and enjoy listening to them. I hope you enjoy them too!

Keep Warm

There is the cold void of space

Expanding through your heart

Temperatures dropping

Daily

Every slight, every ding, every pain

We numb and withdraw

Our sap dropping from limbs to root

Our leaves fall beautiful

Into piles of decay

How to continue

Why go on

When it hurts

Grief overtaking

And spring is so far away

Don’t stay there in the heart of winter

Rest and repair and rise again

Capture each ray of sunshine

Be soothed by the songs of the birds

Revel in the blue, blue sky

Wrap the grey clouds around you

Sprout

Grow

Fly

The heart of summer is always within you

A blooming meadow

Paradise of butterflies and bumblebees

Keep warm

With the kind word of a friend

Laughter

A good book

Keep warm deep into the restless night

Keep warm kindled sparks in reserve

Until you become the star

Puddle of Words

I fell into the puddle

Like a portal lying there

Reflecting trees and skies

The words that drew me inward

I fell through every letter

Into a different world

Each sentence pulled me downward

The phrases building folks who

Walked on cobbled paths

Carrying baskets filled with wares

Dodging horse and carts and chickens

I fell into the puddle

Through to another place

Where the heroes battled creatures

Well defined and clear

Where the outcome was uncertain

But the action was decisive

A world unlike our world

With its hazy ambiguity

With its tricky navigation

With its dicey risking choices

With its rolling indecision

Each letter brought me closer

Every phrase painted in the detail

Each sentence led me onward

Until I reached the end

And came back to this world

Bringing with me what I learned

The treasures which we cherish

Are unmeasured when they

Are love

Infinite

Unending

I walk along the sidewalk

A library of wishes

After a light rain

Peering into puddles

Until I fall again

Dream House

Why have you been visiting

To whom do you belong

You bring your partially shaded patio

With a view of that partially hidden path

Leading to a garden shed

You bring your comfy couch

The big long kitchen table

And overladen shelves of books

Into my dreams

Across the lazy curving road

A hill arises

Further up the road

Around a bend – is that a garden center

Or an arbor nursery

Why have you come

If not to provide me welcome

For a visit not yet invited

A recurring teasing glimpse

Of a place I might end up

Somewhen

A time of laughter among friends

With the sunlight pouring into

Windows made of dreams

Shimmer 12/8/2020

Streaming light within the garden walls

I was sitting on the cement bench

Having fled the cold, dark halls

Holding open one of my favorite books

Sitting there within one of my favorite

Reading nooks

Tucked just at the curving juncture

Snuck just around the little bend

Shaded by the elm tree

Reading about things that could have been

Reading about things that just might be

In a world so far from you and me

Sunlight streaming in

Sunlight beaming in

Setting a small flower in a glimmer

Setting a small flower into a shimmer

How hope blooms in the garden

How the dark is driven back

How you came around the corner

Unforeseen and unexpected

How you walked the curving path

To end up in my favorite spaces

To end up in my favorite places

I felt a little shiver in the shade

I looked into your eyes and thought

I had it made, but you kept walking

Kept walking right on by this perfect place

And I bent back toward my book

At least I’d had a look

At what the future just might hold

If I could just be bold

With the sunlight streaming in

With the sunlight beaming in

How hope blooms in the garden

How the dark is illuminated

How you must have turned around again

As you’re sitting next to me right now

Sitting carefully by me now

With permission

Asking what I’m reading

A lively discussion

In the garden with the glimmer

In the garden set to shimmer

And the summer never ends

Summer never ends now
