Behind the Song: 10 Cent Angel

Patchwork Blue Album

You don’t look back. You fly.

Leaving
Being Uncomfortable
Meeting Angels
Turning it around

10 Cent Angel is about leaving – not the nostalgic adventure, but the one where staying would mean the death of spirit, destruction. This is the song for those who walked, or ran away, and who maybe looked back once or twice and kept going.

This is for those who want to go, who need to go, or who have considered it. If you understood the fuel behind the leaving, you might understand how it wouldn’t be as true if it had been done differently.

This song is also for those met along the path, who shared a part of the journey. Good company. Angels taking care of angels. Shelters in the storm. Those kind words, and unexpected generosity. Thank you.

And this is for the gossips left behind – the petty speculation  and mean-spirited focus are part of the whole problem with humanity. Turn your mind to helping yourself and others.

And lastly this song for those who take advantage  of others’ youth, innocence, and naivete – you never win, nor will you ever win.

Moved and Still Moving

I moved out and away

I am moving still

There’s an upcoming appointment with home

There’s a house

Itty Bitty

Teeny tiny it’s true

Where I will make a bed and

Have a little room

A place for a garden

A spot in the shade

It’s all underway

But there’s paths to cross until I get there

A hop and jump before then

A brief moment of time

A few things to accomplish

So this strange disarray of living and moving

Suitcase is packed

Organized chaos

I might be here and there

Rarely

Checking in briefly

Unpacking just prior

To repacking and shifting

I contract and expand

Like a heart beating surely

Like a heart beating truely

One more step or two

One after the next

To a small little place of my own

Ain’t life grand

Sprung

A little nugget

Wedged within

The sliver of space

Between

A rock and a hard place

Swelling with moisture

A crack in the opening

Rooted and growing

Emotions flowing upward

And outward

Emanating loveliness

A joyful play of colors

On a lonely stretch of road

A meeting of kindred spirits

Overlooked but not forgotten

What has sprung there in the darkness

But the renewal of hope vanquishing

The forlorn heart with love and understanding

This is how we grow, darling

In a tight spot

Sunlit

I Left You In the Mirror

Maybe you are crying still

Our eyes met briefly through the pane

When I walked away with no glance back

I thought I heard your hand tap gently

On the golden gilded frame

It’s been years since I last saw you there

Generations past

I think I see your shadow waver

Glimpses through the looking glass

I shut my eyes and turn away

This path is long and neverending

Quietly descending

Then loudly challenging the force

Of gravity’s heel clutching fingers

I won’t look

I left you in the mirror

And as far as I can care to know

You’re standing in there still

Yet I write these letters

Hoping that you’ll see

We’ve almost made it home now

Almost there

It won’t be long now

Almost free

And in the morning misty air

Shower fogged and steamy mirror

I thought I saw you wave to me

Still safe behind the glass

I held your gaze a moment

And made peace with the past

I went into my draft folder to delete this morning’s draft and found this titled, but unwritten post. As they do sometimes, the words flowed easily. When I went looking for a photo, I found this one captivating, and better than the image I thought I had been seeking.

Behind the Song: The Blues Call It Out

Patchwork Blue Album

Rosalie sent me a little bit about the making of the song, The Blues Call It Out off of the Patchwork Blue album:

“The blues surround us. We cannot escape. We listen to ease our souls, to laugh off our troubles, to relate to the story. We need the blues to get through.

In this song, I’m having a bit of fun playing around with the blues. Call it what you want, it’s the blues right or wrong.”

How’s the Weather?

The day threatened to swelter

The night took one step back

I was crying at the kitchen sink

Too hot and tired to pray

The dogs lay on the cool tile floor

Napping to the beat

My heart started to crumble

Nothing ventured down the hall

“Babe” echoed and resounded

I fell apart and gained

There is no sorrow quite just like

What came in with the rain

I’m shrinking from the spotlight

Fleeing back against the wall

I could bloom here very nicely

Purple petals waving gently

Too many eyes can see me

And I’m fastened to the floor

If I move my arms just right

Can I fly away again

Just myself and twinkling stars

In a vacuum isolated

Snuggled deep inside a comfort zone

I could sleep while they all waited

But the moment shouldered past

My fears and hesitations

The dishes now are drying

Wrung from their moisture laden faces

A little ocean settling

From a stormy perturbation

Effortless

So many things in life are hard

Difficult

Complex

We struggle just to rise some days

And float along the next

Such imperfect cadences

Flow smoothly to the rocky

Rapid stones within this winding river

Flung around a blinded bend

Straight into a logjam

How surprising

Unexpected

We are stuck while others pass us by

As we untangle from the brambles

That caught our little boat

Frustrated at

A nexus

Striving to be on the way again

We make paddles out of branches

Weaving them together

Like our lives tightly intertwined

The only thing that’s easy

The only thing that’s smooth

The one thing I can count on truly

Is this love I have for you

When it comes to you

My heart is steady

This love is

The well from which I draw

Effortless

This love is

Unending cosmic music through the

Galaxy

We are free now drifting slowly

We are holding on and letting go

We are graceful in slow motion

Certain when we come to racing water

The world around us whirling

We dance around the rapids now

Effortless

Together

Effortlessly

Bound

In spirit

This is why we try

Heart centered motivation

Love in daily action

Eyes opened wide and wider

To see each other clearer

While we navigate this stream

My love is effort

Effortlessly sound

Landscape

We stand prominent

Overlooking and

Overlooked

Peaks peeking in the distance

While the sky watches closely

As we reach upward

Infinite embrasure

Larger inside

Than outside
